Discussion:
Thunderbird won't "Compose" new or reply message

I just installed FC6 on a Dual Athlon box. First I had the "udev"
problem where it would hang on the modprobe line in 50-udev.rules, which
I commented out so the system would boot. Then the GUI to create a
xorg.conf for multiple monitors wouldn't work, it never does for me. I
manually configured it and Xinerama on 4 monitors now works fine.

Lastly, Thundirbird won't allow me to compose or reply to a message. I
get the error:

An error occurred while creating a message compose window. Please check
your installation.

I've never seen this problem before. All other popups in Thundirbird
work ok from the tools menu. It's a strange one! It works ok on FC6 on
other computers but not my Dual Athlon box. This was a fresh install of
FC6 on what was an FC4 box. My home dir remained intact. Couls there
be a FC4 setting in my home dir messing up thunderbird?

Thanks

Well, you could try moving your ~/.mozilla/tb directory out of the way and
let TB make a new one.

That way, you could at least rule it out.

And or create a new user, log in as that user and give it a go.

I saved my .thinderbird dir to .thunderbird.hold and restarted
thunderbird, made a new profile and I get the same error when trying to
reply or compose a message:

"An error occurred while creating a message compose window. Please try
again."

This is really getting strange. Any other popup window in TB works
fine, just not a compose or reply window. Where can I look for errors
or debugging messages?

Confused...

If you run TB from a terminal - are there error messages when you open the
window?

This problem (can't compose an email) seems to be related to the
.mozilla/pluginreg.dat file. When I remove it I can compose and reply
to emails. It has a lot of stuff in in it, how might I diagnose this
problem?

Sorry - my home TB path is ~/.thunderbird/

I don't have a ~/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat file...
[cr33 at xps400 ~]$ find -iname pluginreg.dat
./.mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat

At the risk of giving more bad advice, maybe move/rename the
pluginreg.datfile and see if mozilla/TB/FF recreates it?

Hm I have been seeing this today, after the Thunderbird security update.

It seems it will not create a second reply window if the first is still
unsent. In addition it spawned an empty window set to 10x10 pixels or
somesuch in the top left at one point, but has not crashed FWIW.

Had the same problem. Stopping T-Bird and restarting it solved the problem.
