Discussion:
Evolution spellcheck (English (American))

Hi all,
I was typing an email a minute ago and used the word "gauge" in it.
After debating with myself on the spelling, I looked it up:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=gauge
Typing that in, Evolution did not like it! This was just too bizarre
not to share :-). So, should I file a bug somewhere? Where? What
does the spellchecking for Evolution? Does anyone else see this?
$ rpm -qa evolution
evolution-2.8.2.1-3.fc6.x86_64

Hmm, you're lucky to have your language somewhat supported. Ours isn't,
at all, so I've killed the spell checking. However, for a change,
something about this is actually documented in the Evolution help file:

"To choose a spell-checking language, select it here. You must install
the gnome-spell package, available through ZENworks? Linux Management,
for spell-checking to be available in Evolution. Additional dictionaries
are also available through Red Carpet? and are detected automatically if
you have installed them. To have the composer automatically check your
spelling while you type, select Check Spelling While I Type."

Good luck finding anything to sort out your problems, though. I've
never managed to find much of any use from Novell's website (that's
where Red Carpet and ZENworks live).

<http://www.mail-archive.com/evolution-list at gnome.org/msg05180.html>
Suggests that aspell is used with it, as well.

Could we have an example? I have never had much problem with spellcheck

Of a English word spelled incorrectly that the spellcheck does not
catch. It catches all of mine so I just wondered. But I don't want to
make a Major thread over this. You can send me the example(s) off list
if you don't want to clutter up the list. Of course I can't respond
directly to you.

'twas the other guy that started the topic... But if one is desperate
to contact me, it can be done. However, I'll respond back to the list
about some stuff, now, that's generally applicable to this topic. This
pops up from time to time.

I tend to make do with British spelling if I can't use Australian, it's
generally close to ours, and certainly closer than American. That, or
just do without spell checking. In all the years I've been using
computers, it's somewhat unusual to have an Australian dictionary (or
other checkers), so I've gotten use to not having one. Most of my
spelling errors are typing errors, rather than spelling errors. I tend
to notice them. For the cases that I did want one, my usual approach
was to load up a document that's perfectly typed, and add all the words
it complained about to the user dictionary. ;-)

I've switched it on to check British English, now, and it's flagged
"spelled" and "spellcheck" as incorrect. Ah, the irony... It should be
"spelt," to us, and spell check or spell-check, until it become adopted
as a new word.

The usual culprits are things like color versus colour (British and
Australian spelling), metre and litre (correct original spelling, by
those who invented the terms), and words ending with ise/ize (most
Australian words end with ise - like advertise, but I believe the Brits
have gravitated towards using ize endings). So you can see, we really
do need individual dictionaries, not picking one that's sort of similar.

Hey look the topic was that evolution does not work on American English
(look at your subject line) and I asked for an example. Instead I get a
diatribe on how an American dictionary will not work for English or
Australian spelling. That is certainly true.

You better not tell me how to e-mail you directly. In would be bad for
both of us I think.

"It will take one year," said the master promptly. "But we need this

Oh pull your fucking head in. You asked me rather than the original
poster about something *vague*. *You* never asked specifically about
supplying you with a word that the American dictionary handled
differently. I gave you a general description of where the differences
lay. If you want to interpret that as an attack on how the yanks manage
to bugger up the English language, then go right ahead.

Suggests that aspell is used with it, as well.
This seems to be accurate. I have three English dictionaries listed:
America, British, and Canadian. These are also the ones provided in
the aspell-en package. More conclusively, running aspell on a text
file with "gauge" in it, aspell doesn't know the word. So, looks like
this is a deficiency in aspell's dictionary.

Interestingly, checking this same file with LANG=en_BR, aspell does
not complain. So "gauge" appears to be in the British dictionary,
just not the American. After some more poking around dictionary.com,
it looks like "gage" is a possible alternate spelling, though it has
its own, quite different, meaning as well. Oh the joys of the English
language :-). Perhaps it is assumed that "gage" is the preferred
American spelling. I don't know. I think I've mostly always seen it
as "gauge," but.... Maybe I'll just add it to my dictionary and be
done with it. Or does someone else think this is bug-worthy?

Err, whoops... No, I actually used en_BR.... Trying again with en_GB
yields the same results though, so my reasoning is still valid :-).
And what do you know, en_XX even knows about "gauge"... looks like
aspell doesn't warn you in any way if you select a non-existent
language. I guess it's hard to misspell a word in a non-existent
language.
