Discussion:
F9: Canon LBP2900 no go: "usblp1: error -32 reading printer status"

Hi all,

I am trying to get a Canon LBP2900 laser printer working under F9.

Alas, the driver is (apparently) closed and not included in the Caps
package, which might be a reason to avoid this printer, but be that as
it may, one can download a Linux driver easily enough from Canon:

http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010177.asp

These are the latest RPMs:

2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-capt-1.60-1.i386.rpm
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-common-1.60-1.i386.rpm

Once installed, CAPS automatically recognizes the printer and selects
what appears to be the correct driver:

Canon LBP2900 CAPT ver.1.5

Likewise, the printer shows up properly in dmesg:

usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 26
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 26 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04A9
pid 0x2676
usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=2676
usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-4: Product: Canon CAPT USB Device
usb 1-4: Manufacturer: Canon
usb 1-4: SerialNumber: 0000A380HGkZ

but if I try a test page, nothing happens. The only indication that
something is wrong is this error message repeatedly displayed in dmesg:

usblp1: error -32 reading printer status

Any ideas what is going on here?

Thanks.

of course, I meant Canon, not Lexmark.

However, is the LexMark printer working correctly?

I realized that. ;) Yes, the Z51 works fine.

Nothing else to report from the kernel log; just hundreds of these:

usblp1: error -32 reading printer status

Google turns up only a very small number of hits for this, none of which
shed any light on the matter for me.

Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks.

This couldn't be a usb1 vs usb2 issues, could it? Have you tried
swapping the cables on the two usb printers to see what happens? Or
tried a different usb cable?

Maybe some information there that is pertinent.

Kevin, thanks for your suggestions. I tried a different USB cable. No
difference. I also tried disabling USB v2 by running "modprobe -r ehci_hcd"
in case the LBP2900 had some obscure USB v2 issue. Likewise no luck. I also
tried connecting the printer to a laptop running Ubuntu 8.04, with an older
kernel than F9, 2.6.24-19. Basically the same results.

Tomorrow I will try the v1.7 version driver from Canon Asia, and see if the
documentation has any pointers.

I have an LBP5300 and works perfectly.

Just follow the installation instructions from the driver documentation.
Do not use any other installation method.

My advice is that you erase any trace of the failed installation and
strictly follow the installation manual.

BTW, you can get a more uptodate driver from.

Thanks, Manuel. I am downloading the more recent 1.7 version. Strange that
the latest version is 1.6 at Canon Europe site -- and 1.5 at Canon Japan!

I will review the documentation tomorrow.

Hi again,

v1.7 of the CAPT driver has a dependency unmet in F9:

$ sudo rpm -Uvh cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386.rpm
cndrvcups-common-1.70-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libstdc++.so.5 is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(CXXABI_1.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386

I have libstdc installed, but apparently the wrong version:

$ rpm -qa | grep libstdc
libstdc++-devel-4.3.0-8.i386
libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386

What package did you install to get the v1.7 driver working under F9?

Thanks.

BTW, you can get a more uptodate driver from.
http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/contents/ASIA/EN/0900772401.html
Hi again,

v1.7 of the CAPT driver has a dependency unmet in F9:

$ sudo rpm -Uvh cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386.rpm
cndrvcups-common-1.70-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libstdc++.so.5 is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(CXXABI_1.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2.2) is needed by cndrvcups-capt-1.70-1.i386

I have libstdc installed, but apparently the wrong version:

$ rpm -qa | grep libstdc
libstdc++-devel-4.3.0-8.i386
libstdc++-4.3.0-8.i386

What package did you install to get the v1.7 driver working under F9?

Thanks.

I have an LBP5300 and works perfectly.

Just follow the installation instructions from the driver documentation.
Do not use any other installation method.

My advice is that you erase any trace of the failed installation and
strictly follow the installation manual.

BTW, you can get a more uptodate driver from.

Thanks.

What does lpstat -t show? Is the printer enabled?
