Hello!
which GNU application can do work like MS Visio for creating
Graphical illuatrations?
I think Dia or KDE's Kivio might be the most direct replacements to Visio.

Inkscape is a generic vector drawing application that has some
connector drawing ability.

OpenOffice Draw can also make connectors between objects too.

Each have their limitations and benefits.

Don't know Visio in particular, but xfig sounds like it might be
similar.

I used an old version of Visio before Microsoft bought it, Dia is a good
replacement.
I don't know Kivio, it might fit just as well.

You'll have to take 4 steps.....

Google "microsoft visio alternative". Get list. Try them out. Decide.

I did that a while back and spent ages struggling with
ancient tk based apps. Dia was a bit awkward. In
the end I discovered Inkscape. It's not the same thing
(more illustrative than technical) but can produce really
nice results with only a little practice.

Dia isn't a GNU project, but it's Free Software licensed under the GNU GPL.

Whilst many applications give somewhat familiar capabilities, if your
"visio-alike" interest is for drawing network diagrams, Dia is the way to go.

As the other posters suggested, Kivio (in the koffice-kivio package) and Dia
are the general diagram-drawing tools available. If your diagrams happen to be
UML diagrams, you might find Umbrello (in the kdesdk package) to be a more
powerful tool though. It is quite different though: Kivio and Dia let you draw
almost freeform and only take care of the connections between the boxes.
Umbrello, on the other hand, "knows" UML and helps you much more than Kivio or
Dia will, however it will not let you draw things which do not comply to the
UML standard. Whether this is a good or bad thing depends on what you're trying
to do. You might also run into features of the current UML standard which
aren't supported by the current version of Umbrello. But if you can live with
this restriction, you might like some of the more advanced features in
Umbrello. There's also BOUML, another UML diagram tool, available now. I
haven't tried that one.

Thanks for the tip. This seems useful.

I wish I could use kivio, but there seems to be no way to get any vector
output from it. It's supposed to output svg, but that's currently broken
(koffice-kivio-1.6.3-9.fc7 + ghostscript-8.15.4-3.fc7)

I have used both openoffice draw and inkscape for svg diagrams. Inkscape
does svg very well. For things like network diagrams and UML, dia always
works well.
